Majida Al-Husain
(Austin, TX)
Majida began her yoga practice almost 11 years ago while a Pre-Medicine/Womens Wholistic Health major at Miami Universtiy in Oxford, Ohio. Receiving her 200-hr RYT in Ashtanga, her training strongly emphasized Hatha, Yin, Vinyasa, and Anusara, as these were the backgrounds of her core instructors. She have been blessed to study under David and Doug Swenson, Katchie Ananda, Shiva Rea, Sharon Gannon and David Life, and Kino MacGregor, to name a few. However, none of these famous names tops her greatest mentor and friend, Indu Bala Bhardwaj, owner and senior instructor of Its Yoga-Cincinnati. The various forms of yoga that she has and continue to study include Hatha, Jivamukti, Ashtanga, Anusara, Yin/Restorative, Partner, Vinyasa, Iyengar, Bikram and Yoga Dance. She has also studied Sanskrit, has been a life-long student of Arabic and Islam, and has experience in various aspects of Yogic Spirituality, including chanting, Naad Yoga and deep meditation.
In addition to her daily asana and meditation practice, she is a certified Thai Yoga Practitioner via a 200-hr training at the SomaVeda Thai Yoga Ashram in Plant, City Florida and is working toward her 2170-hr certification as a Thai Yoga Therapist, Instructor, and Holistic Health Practitioner. Majida is in the midst of a Certified Herbalist course in Planetary (Western, Chinese, and Ayurveda) Herbalism and completing a DONA certification as a birth coach. She is currently attending The Lauterstein-Conway School of Therapeutic Massage here in Austin and will be attending AOMA for her acupuncture studies next year, throughout which she will be working as a Midwifery Assistant. Majida will begin work towards her 500-hr RYT certification through Yoga Yoga in the summer. She intends on rounding out her holistic healing education by studying either Direct-Entry (via Naturopathic School) Midwifery or becoming a Family Physician with a focus on (w)Holistic Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Via the companies that she and her husband, Sufijan (Peter) Cunningham (also a Hiking Yoga instructor!) founded, PraniLove and HumbleBee Foods, she has worked as a detox coach and Raw/Living and Vegan food chef, and caterer. A recent transplant to Austin from Cincinnati, Ohio, she has taught Ashtanga Yoga and Yin Yoga at Its Yoga Cincinnati, at You Do Yoga, Majida taught Hot Ashtanga Vinyasa and Candlelit Taoist Yin/Restoritive Yoga, and she worked teaching Childrens Yoga for a year at an award-winning math camp in which she served as both an asana instructor and Waldorf and Montessori math tutor for children ages K through 8 from the Cincinnati Public School District. Currently, she is an instructor for Hiking Yoga-Austin, works with private clients and apprentices in Pre/Postnatal Yoga at Yoga Yoga here in Austin.
